Aloha Lomi Massage Academy

The Aloha Lomi Massage Academy is the realization of a vision that has been developing over the past 8 years, being the first step into Bringing The Healers Back Into The Families.  We provide a quality, affordable massage certification course, with an emphasis on Mana Lomi, which is clinical lomilomi that has been handed down through the Big Island lineage of Aunty Margaret and other Kupuna.  Dr. Maka’ala Yates, D.C., a kanaka ma’oli, was chosen as a child to bring this sacred healing to all of us who wish to receive it; he is our Kumu for these teachings.

We also offer workshops throughout the year that are approved by the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage & Bodywork (NCBTMB), and anyone is welcome to take part in these wonderful offerings.  In addition, we have an on-going apprentice clinic for the community, with $30 student massages offered Monday through Friday from 9 to 5.  Mahalo Kumukahi!

More Stories from Small Town In Movement

The New Pew

We got the pew at the estate sale of Mrs. Huddy, or, what I like to refer to as “the garage sale by which we now compare all other garage sales”.  At this sale, Leanne (from Pagoda) seemed so relieved that I would take the huge thing away, while I tried to not act overjoyed.  Two adults can lay down on it and not touch!  There are little shelves for books and pencils in the back!  Imagine the history in such a bench!

(Also at this sale, but not pertinent to the story, were dozens of garden gnomes performing various activities, pewter dish sets, a coffee mug with a portrait of all the American presidents up to Clinton, wall calendars from the 60’s, and Alice, my new knitting friend.  I like to say I got Alice at a garage sale, too.)

I gathered four men to collect the pew.  Instead of actually tying it into the back of Paul’s truck, Ryan sat on the inside end of it, the other end jutting into the street at the half way point.  We figured Ryan’s weight could keep it in the bed of the truck for the short distance to my house, which would have been the case if the right turn hadn’t been rushed and there wasn’t a dip in the gravel driveway, poor Ryan bouncing around like a holy roller on Sunday.

The Pew Gets Repaired

It sat at my house for 6 months while I “repaired” it.  In the future, remind me that a.) gorilla glue gets mostly on the outside and on your hand, b.) leaving the furniture clamp on the furniture for two weeks doesn’t mean it sticks better, c.) maybe read a manual before trying to repair an ageless piece of furniture, or, and better yet, d.) do not let me try to repair an ageless piece of furniture.

When the new Small Town Coffee location arose, it was obvious the church pew was going to live there.  Some of us already think of a coffee shop as a kind of church, what better way to commemorate the thought than to make sore our butts with an old uncomfortable wooden pew?  And when Karen and Melodie brought the pew to the new shop, it was home.  We immediately sat five old men and a few others down and gave up a hallelujah.

Ryan completed his bonding with the bench that nearly sent him to the beyond by sanding it smooth.  (I would have given that task to the myriad butts to meet it, but hey, everyone tells me what to do.)  Even though we’re still finishing the coffee shop, there is someone sitting on the pew everyday.  We eat lunch on it.  We open beers with it (a religious experience indeed).  We look at the ocean from it.  We sit with eight other humans on it.  And the more someone sits there and enjoys the pew, the more the coffee shop feels like home.

Thank you, Mrs. Huddy.  We like it.

Small Town is Moving: A New Small Town Story Begins

| Sponsors | August 25, 2011

As far as words go, the word “community” is a word I dislike.  It is overused.  It’s common.

Our Community . . . .

In our community, we use it to describe everything, but only because we can’t quite communicate the concept.  It doesn’t quite translate to “family” since that typically denotes people with the same nose and hair color that you can, but don’t mean to, ignore and it’s still okay.  “Community” doesn’t mean “village” either, because that is a bunch of nutcases dressed up as cops and Indians, or perhaps they’re isolated Ukrainians named Shapka and Fyodor.  And “community” isn’t “friends” either, because that doesn’t complete the picture of all the people taking part in something larger than the individual, even though your community may contain friends, but you may not comply with the Facebook etiquette with all those people.

What community seems to be is a complicated combination of people and pets, possessing a commonality.  A co-mutuality.  A complicity.  A co-mingling.  A veritable composting of ideas and intentions.  Compatriots.  Comrades.

I must commend my community for coming together for a common goal, even if it is commerce.  They exhibited a commitment to their common ground – the local coffee shop.  I have only seen this type of commitment to a church or a political organization.

The First Workday

For the first workday, 24 people showed up and caulked, spackled, measured, sawed, built, rebuilt, cleaned, oiled, scrubbed, moved, painted, you name it.  If I hadn’t been directing traffic and buying beer and pizza, I would have cried about the generosity.  Three weeks later, people are still working everyday, at various skill levels, and for different hours of the day, but there is always someone there.

The New Coffee Shop

Everyone is making the new coffee shop better than the old one.  I thought the new shop would be a slightly cleaner version of the old shop, but the people are in there staining mahogany, cleaning up the original antique fixtures, or arguing over the best ways to preserve the character of the building.  Where’s the particle board shelving?  Where are the holes in the walls for the termites to push out their accomplishments?  Where are the coffee stains on the floor?  Where is the shoddy workmanship and leaky faucet?  Where are the dying houseplants and crooked photographs?

I am, along with my community, completely beside myself.  (squeeze that into some imagery.)  Small Town Coffee people are defining community for me.

KY-MANI MARLEY HAWAIIAN ISLAND CONCERT TOUR ANNOUNCED

KY-MANI MARLEY HAWAIIAN ISLAND CONCERT TOUR ANNOUNCED

Grammy nominee and son of reggae icon Bob Marley, Ky-mani Marley will be coming back to the Hawaiian Islands from July 2-5, 2011.

“I am looking forward to delivering a spectacular performance on the Hawaiian Islands this July and eager to share my music with the Island people,” stated Ky-Mani Marley.

Incorporating world music, hip hop, blues, rock and a grass roots sound into his music, the end product is the pure representation of life for Ky-Mani. His sound is one that transcends cultural lines and prohibits him from being categorized as only a reggae artist.

Being exposed to an urban lifestyle, Ky-Mani adopted the attitude that all people are equal – no one is above or beneath him. This attitude has become the motto for the way he lives his life today. Humble. Soft spoken. Sincere. Loyal. Honest. Genuine. These are the makings of Ky-mani Marley.

Recently on a promotional tour for his autobiography book, Dear Dad, which was released on February 6, The young Marley is also working on his new clothing line Konfrontation, his non-profit organization Love Over All Foundation (LOAF) and recording new material for his upcoming album Evolution of a Revolution.

July 3 – Kuhio Lounge, Aston Aloha Hotel, Kapaa, Kauai (21+ show)
July 4 – SoHo Mixed Media Bar, Honolulu, Oahu (18+ show)

LIFE-COACHING with HIYAGUHA

| Sponsors | February 3, 2011

WHY LIFE-COACHING with HIYAGUHA?

The thing about life is that you can’t make it stand still and behave. As soon as you get everything in order, it seems that something comes along to shake you up so that your life looks like a chessboard knocked onto the floor, pieces scattered all over. It doesn’t matter how spiritual you are, how diligent, how conscious—
life has a funny sense of humor, it seems. It will find the one thing that can knock you off-balance and gift it to you, and then the trouble begins.

The trouble starts when you try to protect yourself against life’s vicissitudes and the possibility of shock, hurt, failure, and disappointment by building routines and habits that make everything seem stable and safe, but actually end up locking you in rather than guiding you forward. You get stuck and can’t achieve what you want. You may not recognize what led you to get locked in, but you do know that you feel stuck.

The trouble continues when you get caught unawares by the shifts that DO come, whether they be in the form of illness, or death of loved ones, or income loss, or nasty statements made by supposed friends, or rejections, or bad decisions you make, or even strange dreams. Suddenly, you find yourself scrambling to feel okay again, you may behave in ways you don’t want to, you are overwhelmed and totally off-balance. And that’s where life coaching comes in.

THE LIFE-CHANGE APPROACH

In the most simple terms, I help people to get unstuck and move forward. This may mean clearing some trauma or limiting belief or procrastination, and “re-setting” the compass so that the goal doesn’t get lost. I teach a few easy techniques that clear stress as soon as it arises so that you can embrace change and “surf” it, rather than get overwhelmed by it.

First, and I think best, is TAT, or Tapas Acupressure Technique. This is an energy meridian technique that involves touching acupressure points on the head while holding thoughts about stressful events that you’re trying to clear. I have found this technique to be almost miraculous in its ability to dissolve trauma, stress, anxiety, depression, and limiting beliefs. Plus, it can be used for spiritual growth and transformation and raising consciousness. I am a certified TAT practitioner.

I also use solutions-focused coaching, hero’s journey coaching, the Seasons of Change (employing nature’s wisdom as a guide for healing), journaling, Byron Katie’s The Work, the Willow System, purpose clarity coaching, active visualization, and various other energy healing modalities according to what you need.

Celebrate Black History Month

Celebrate Black History Month

Come celebrate Black History Month with one of largest names in the reggae scene. Roots reggae rockers, Midnite, from St. Croix in the US Virgin Islands, return to the Garden Island.

Midnight in Concert on Kaua’i

The concert will be on Feb. 2 at the Kuhio Lounge in the Aston Aloha Hotel in Kapaa. Midnite has been coming to the Hawaiian Islands for over 6 years and they have performed Kauai many
times, the last being at the One Love Gardens for over 800 people. Midnite is considered to be one of the most popular reggae bands touring today and has a loyal following in the reggae and
Rastafarian movement. Midnite is known to play real roots reggae music which originally came from Jamaica. Not only do they preach Rastafarian life in their music, they live it. They are true
Rastafarians who practice Vegetarianism and hold to strict diets for spiritual and health reasons. Their songs are filled with deep and political issues regarding the Rastafarian movement and the
struggles we all face in today’s modern world.

Midnite’s profound and innovative lyrics are sincere and deeply rooted, representing their culture. Their CD recordings and live performances have reggae and non reggae listeners open to the messages they bring. Midnite explodes in live performances with sets that often exceed 3
hours. Their vigorous, weighty sound, driven by the punchy bass lines creates a vibe that penetrates straight to the heart. These epic musical communions have earned Midnite
an enormous following throughout the roots community.

Opening Guests

Opening guests for the concert will be Kauai’s favourite reggae band, The Lambsbread. Bringing pure fyah to the stage, lead singer Kaya delivers a message of upliftment and positivity to
the crowd. Adding her angelic voice and sweet harmonies to the music is female vocalist for the Lambsbread, Nadia. On stage they are backed by the Fyah Red Band which consists of some of the top musicians in the Hawaii reggae scene. The group has had several international hits, starting with their first single from Zion High Records “Love in the House” 2004. The tune was released on 7in vinyl from Kingston, Jamaica, and the single was heard worldwide. The video for the tune has reached half a million views on YouTube and is watched by fans from Brazil, France, Netherlands, Germany, US, Hawaii and more. Their next hit came with the tune “Mountain Top” featuring Prezident Brown, released by Lustre Kings 2006. Still in heavy rotation on Hawaii radio, this tune came out on the Red Razor compilation and spent 3 months in
the top 50 selling reggae albums at Itunes peaking at # 8.

Chutney Indian and Nepalese Cuisine

| Sponsors | October 31, 2010

My name is Sambada Starcher, but I go by Sam.

I am the owner of Chutney’s, along with my chef; Bindeshor and Kakashapati (he is in Maui). I was born in Katmandu, Nepal. I came to America right after high school to San Diego, and got my Bachelor’s degree in International Business; marketing was my concentration. I lived in San Diego for about five years and then in Austin, Texas. I have been here on Kauai since January of 2010.

Kaua’i, with the friendliness of its people, the mountains and the lovely greenery everywhere, reminds me a bit of Katmandu; of course, with an elevation of over 4,500 feet, there is no ocean in Katmandu.

We (my sister, Mahima and I) came here originally for a vacation and we fell in love with Kauai; we knew we had to live here.

The Vision

Ever since I was in college I had a vision of opening an Indian restaurant and when we discovered there was no Indian restaurant here we decided to explore the possibility of bringing forth the dream into reality. Since this is a first for me, it has been a big adventure. Although I am new to this business, I have had some great coaching from my uncle, who has a restaurant in Colorado Springs and Maui.

We had looked at places in Maui and Honolulu for our restaurant, but we knew we had to settle here on this beautiful island. We were here for a month before we found this place. We fell in loved the openness and airiness of this location. Finally, at the end of February, we got the keys.

We opened our doors for business in June and have been very appreciative to the community for the warm reception and support that we have received. Although we utilize a general formula for our operation, we are open to suggestions to provide the most pleasing service to our customers.

Both of our chefs, Sugum and Anil, are from Nepal; Sugum went to school in abu dabhi; chef Anil went to school in Bombay, India. They are both very talented and, along with myself, my sister, and my other co-workers, Umesh, and Tricilla, we make a great team. We are fortunate to have such good people all working together.

Authenticity

The authenticity of the Indian and Nepali influences gives us a uniqueness that differentiates us from other restaurants on the island. Procuring our spices whole and grinding them right here provides a freshness and vitality to our food which excites the palate and opens people up to a new and exciting dimension of food enjoyment.

We are so indebted for our beautiful heritage; this is why we provide a special buffet for our customers on Tuesday night. It is a special night for Chutney’s because people can try our Nepalese food. When China invaded Tibet, a lot of Tibetans went to Nepal. So, we are including Tibetan food as part of our Nepali buffet menu as well.

Yet with all the spices and care with which food is prepared at Chutney’s we are well aware that without Love, nothing will ever work. We know that the love that is present in the person who is preparing the food is transmitted to the food itself, making it taste better while providing a very satisfying culinary adventure. I enjoy going from table to table making sure people are pleased while responding to any requests to enhance our patrons’ experience. I am so happy to have people enjoy the food here.

You will always find us very, very friendly. We combine really good service with good food and a very calm atmosphere. Our restaurant embodies high integrity, humility and reverence, all qualities inherent in the fabric of my home culture of Nepal.

In Service to Kaua’i

We are here to serve Kaua’i and its people. We strive to provide the very best establishment possible; we have a great foundation to work with. Through the centuries we have developed a very refined way of eating, utilizing a skillful blend of spices in our cooking to satisfy, not only the palate, but the heart and soul of the person who shares our food.

Our youth and enthusiasm combined with our willingness to learn and listen to the wise counsel of my uncle along with constructive criticism from the Kaua’i community provide for a vibrant and alive creation that will provide the best service to our patrons for a long time to come.

We are forever grateful to be part of a marriage which blends the loving Aloha of Kaua’i, with the depth, history and cultural diversity of Nepal.

Want to know more about my work??

Want to know more about my work??

 Here’s a recent unsolicited testimonial I received by former client, Sally Mabelle, who is now living in New Zealand.

Joan Levy, my Hero :-)

When I reflect on my life’s journey and the people who have shaped the person I am today, one woman stands out for me as a special hero: Joan Levy, a wise and gifted therapist from Kauai, Hawaii.  I worked with Joan in 2002 and 2003 when I was living on Kauai.  Her passionate caring about people and life is apparent through her twinkling eyes and courageous nature. This is a woman who has ‘been there and done that’ with a wisdom and compassion to match. Joan courageously led me on a journey of self-empowerment and healing which have enabled me to blossom in my work today as a ‘voice of leadership’ specialist,  empowering others to find and express themselves with clarity and confidence.

 As soon as I met her and had one session with her, I knew I was in for a treat. Not only was she extremely perceptive and sensitive, she was also very intelligent and challenging, giving me detailed notes from our session for me to study at home.  I had not encountered that level of attention to detail and commitment before in a therapist.  I worked with her on an almost weekly basis for a couple of years, and she helped me to heal some of my subtle self-sabotaging attitudes and behaviors which had kept me from realizing my authentic potential in relationships and at work.

One thing I struggled with before working with Joan was a f eeling of shame in response to other people’s anger or blame.  If someone would express anger towards me,  I was unable to separate their anger and opinion of me from my own self-image. I would take on a ‘shamed’ feeling, and have an inner self-judgment of being ‘guilty’ or ‘bad’ no matter who was criticizing me.  No matter who was ‘angry’, be it my husband, my employer, a colleague, a friend, or even a shopkeeper or someone I had no familiar relationship with,  I was unable to objectively see any situation and to sustain a healthy self-esteem through even small conflicts.  For this reason, I tended to avoid conflict by adopting false ‘pleasing’ and rebellious behaviors, such as agreeing with people outwardly to appease them when inwardly I would disagree and not always comply.

Loving Care

Through Joan’s loving care, I was able to find my own ability to stand up and defend myself inwardly and outwardly when necessary, to care for myself, and to trust myself.  Unfortunately, I did not learn these abilities from my birth mother who struggled with her own self-esteem, shame, and self-empowerment issues, as many women do.

Joan helped me to see that I AM a good person, and that even though I may make mistakes, I am still inherently good. She helped me to heal that pattern of feeling a sense of shame which had kept me from speaking up with my authentic voice in interactions with others. I distinctly remember a time when my husband was upset with me for a mistake I’d made, and in a moment, I was able to consciously and lovingly say to myself  ‘Sally, you are still a good person and you mean well’ while at the same time openly admitting my mistake to him. That moment was a subtle but profound turning point in my ability to handle conflict while still maintaining my self-esteem instead of collapsing inside.

Joan also helped me to experience a deeper level of trust in myself and in Life through her work with me on mental, emotional, and spiritual levels. Mentally, she encouraged me to question and reprogram my own belief patterns. Emotionally, she nurtured me with courage and gentleness in a re-mothering process.  In one session, I can remember her leading me through a breathing session which magnified the tightness in my jaw – I was not in touch with a deep pain and anger that I had stored there.  Through breathing deeply, I was able to access the emotional memory of screaming as an infant separated from my mother and the pain, loneliness, and anger I had felt on a nonverbal level.  Joan’s willingness to physically and emotionally hold me as if I were a small child, and to help me to feel safe to release the deep wailing that had gone unheard as a child was a precious gift.  I instead was able to re-experience the deep emotion while being loved and held instead of being let alone in the crib to cry myself to sleep. What a beautiful example of the re-mothering process which Joan led me through so lovingly.

Spiritually

Spiritually, Joan helped me to embrace the adventure of life and to affirm my trust in my own higher self and the Universe. As I was leaving Kauai to move to New Zealand, I remember feeling very afraid of making the leap to a new country and a new community. Joan led me through a visualization process of imagining myself being totally supported while I repeated a powerful affirmation of trust and well-being which I still sometimes refer to today when I may face a new challenge.

‘I am trusting myself and Life to care for me – I am safe and secure – all is well.’

Thank you, Joan.

You are my hero. You have been a true gift to me and are a true gift to this world!

Kauai Farmers Co-op, who’s your farmer?

| Sponsors | September 13, 2010

Jillian Seals

Jillian Seals, Director of the Kauai Farmers Co-op, has been an organic farmer for over 20 years. Her co-op provides beyond organic produce – a term the co-op uses when referring to local, organic produce. Her mission is to create a support network for Island farmers where locally grown produce and value added products can be handled, stored and distributed around the Island. Farmers must be willing to go through a stringent quality control process insuring their produce is organic before they are admitted into the co-op. Benefits of joining with the co-op include getting true value for products, having a central destination to sell produce and getting paid right away. The co-op has several farmer members including Jillian’s own 12 acre farm and provides weekly produce to several restaurants who pride themselves on using as much local produce as possible. These restaurants include the Hukilau Lanai, 22 North and Common Ground. The co-op also provides weekly produce deliveries to Papaya’s Natural Foods and Cafe in Kapa’a, where the new produce manager is making constant efforts to provide as much fresh, organic and local produce as possible.

The co-op’s main outlet is through their CSA. CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) is a thriving movement across the United States. A true synthesis of connection in community, farmers and their members have a symbiotic relationship. Members, essentially buying a stake in the farm, pre pay for a season of weekly deliveries known as shares. These shares provide the farmer with a secure source of income to plant their gardens. The farmer knows exactly how much to plant, how many laborers are needed, how much seed to buy and how much water will be needed because they know exactly how many people they are feeding. In turn, members receive a box of freshly harvested organic produce every week. Kauai Farmers Co-op boxes vary in contents and variety and are available in family and single sizes. The co-op provides a large array of produce including broccoli, cauliflower, fennel, cucumber, winter squash, purple sweet potatoes, corn, beans, tomatoes, tomatillos, eggplant, cabbage, taro, peppers, celery, lemons, kale, rainbow chard, tat sai, bok choy, arugula, mustard greens, osaka,  micro greens, beets, carrots, daikon, radish, onions, tender cherokee lettuce, lettuce mix, basil, dill, chives, sage, spearmint, lemongrass, oregano, parsley, cilantro, apple bananas, mangos, lilikoi, lychee and papayas. All organic, all locally grown. The contents vary from season to season.

The benefits of participating in a CSA are many. Your pledge to support a local farm insures you are getting plenty of healthy produce in your diet. Knowing where your food comes from gives you confidence that the produce you receive was grown with sustainable methods thus reducing the risk of contracting E. Coli or salmonella. Dealing directly with the farmer, your produce is cheaper and you are nurturing Kauai’s food security while your carbon footprint is greatly reduced; produce doesn’t travel up to 9000 miles before it gets to you. There is no packaging contributing to the island’s land fill or use of oil to make the packaging. CSA creates strong communities through farm and family partnerships and participating stimulates a healthy economy by creating jobs and supporting local businesses.  Your food choices do matter.

Jillian and her husband Gary have been in operation for close to 5 years connecting folks to food within their own ahuapua’ a or watershed.

After years of participating in the agricultural industry here on Kauai, they continue to provide a creative avenue making food available and affordable. Currently, efforts are being made to become a SNAP outlet.

“We believe in sharing sustainable methods in food growing techniques and in the availability of the food grown locally with deep intention.” In early 2007 Jillian and Gary created a farm training program called Seed to Table. The relationship between their trainings and the orchestration of a consistent distribution outlet gives them confidence to participate in an amazing closed loop system. Both the Kauai Farmers Co-op and Seed to Table programs are well recognized around the island and include personal connections with many local organizations, public and private. Seed to Table remains a 501-c3 under Garden Island Resource Conservation & Development Inc. (GIRC&D), and the Kauai Farmers Co-op continues in it’s formation as a legitimate Agricultural Cooperative.

Aside from running their farm, being a mom and directing their programs, Jillian also teaches agriculture at Kauai Community College in Lihue and at Kauai Pacific School (pre-K-6) on the north shore.

If you are an organic farmer interested in providing produce, have organic eggs or other value added products; are a restaurant interested in procuring local organic produce; are interested in becoming a member of the CSA or in learning about organic farming on Kauai please visit us on Facebook or contact us below:

Francine Kanter CCH, RsHom, Board Certified Homeopath Practitioner

| Sponsors | August 31, 2010

Amidst the jungle of information overload, my role is to provide you with the most simple, safe, cost-effective solutions to help you obtain optimum health. You will be listened to and heard with care and compassion. You will be treated as the unique individual that you are. ”

Francine Kanter CCH, RsHom, Board Certified Homeopath Practitioner, graduated from a 3-year degree in Classical Homeopathy in San Diego, California.  She is active in studying Homeopathy on a regular basis, and is part of several new researches and case studies.

She has been in private practice for over 15 years total, first  in San Diego, and second in  Kauai, since 2001.

WHAT IS HOMEOPATHY?

Homeopathy is an effective and scientific system of healing which assists the natural tendency of the body to heal itself.

It recognizes that all symptoms of ill health are expressions of disharmony within the whole person and that it is that person who needs treatment, not the disease.

As a new client , these ideas may be new to you, but homeopathy has been established for over 200 years.

In 1796 a German doctor, Samuel Hahnemann, discovered a different approach to the cure of the sick, which he called homeopathy (from the Greek words meaning ‘similar suffering’).

Take for example, a case of insomnia. The way of similars, the homeopathic way, is to give the person a minute dose of a substance, such as coffee, which in large doses causes sleeplessness in a healthy person. Perhaps surprisingly, this will help the person to sleep naturally.

Homeopathic remedies cannot cause side effects and you cannot become addicted to them. This is because only a very minute amount of the active ingredient is used in a specially prepared form.

Your homeopath will give you a homeopathic medicine or remedy that matches your symptoms as you experience them, as well individual characteristics: emotional and physical.

How does it work?

Homeopathic medicines work by stimulating the immune system. Once your immune system is strong and functioning effectively, many of your ailments will naturally disappear.

What will your homeopath need to know? Homeopathy realizes that each and every one of us is completely unique. Thus in order to find the right remedy for you, a detailed understanding of who you are, what your complaints are, and how you experience them, is needed to accurately assess your case. Your homeopath will ask you many questions. Not only will you be asked about your presenting complaint, you will also be asked about your general energy level, your past medical history and about your lifestyle. Everything you tell your homeopath will be treated in the strictest confidence. The initial consultation may take up to two hours.

What to expect? A number of changes typically occur after taking your homeopathic remedy. Some people experience a period of exceptional well-being and optimism. Occasionally symptoms appear to get worse for a short time. This is a good sign that the remedy is taking effect. Sometimes a cold, rash or some form of discharge may appear as a ‘spring cleaning’ effect which means your system is going through a cleaning stage. Similarly, old symptoms can reappear, usually for a short period. These symptoms will pass, and must not be treated, as they are a very important part of the healing process. Some people do not notice any changes at all in the beginning of their treatment. In this case a change in the dosage and or selection of remedy may be necessary.

If any response to your treatment concerns you, be sure to discuss this with your homeopath. You might find it helpful to make notes of any changes and take them with you to discuss at your next appointment.

How long does the treatment take? This depends on a number of factors: 1) What type of illness you are suffering from 2) How long you have had the illness 3) Your age and overall health 4) Your sensitivity

The longer you wait before seeking treatment, the longer it takes to treat. When your body starts to show signs of imbalance or disease, don’t hesitate, get help right away. For acute (short-term) ailments, treatment can be very rapid. Long standing ailments take time to treat. Homeopathy cures from the inside, and often outer symptoms such as a skin complaint, are the last to clear. Be patient! In the long term it is much better to address the underlying imbalance than merely relieving or suppressing the symptoms.

Will I need to change my diet or lifestyle? A healthy diet, regular exercise, enough sleep and relaxation are all part of being healthy. Sometimes old habits are difficult to break however. Many of my clients remark that after homeopathic treatment they are much healthier both physically and emotionally, and are able to make healthy choices in a way that feels natural and effortless.

What about seeing a General Practitioner? I recommend maintaining a relationship with your primary care doctor. Homeopathic remedies are non-habit forming. Homeopathic remedies are easy and pleasant to take.

Who uses homeopathy?

Anyone can use homeopathy: babies, pregnant women, the elderly. Homeopathy is used to treat both physical and mental and emotional conditions. The use of homeopathy is advocated by the world health organization. Famous people who have used homeopathy successfully include: The Royal Family of Great Britain, Mahatma Gandhi, Mother Theresa, Mark Twain, Tina Turner, John D. Rockefeller Sr and Paul McCartney just to name a few. In fact Homeopathy is common place in many countries, including: England, Australia, New Zealand, India, Russia, Brazil, etc

In the United Kingdom, around 42 percent of physicians refer patients to homeopathic practitioners, and homeopathic training is the most popular post-graduate training program. There are homeopathic hospitals world-wide, including London, Scotland, Moscow, India, etc

10 Good Reasons to Use Homeopathy:

  1. NO HARMFUL SIDE EFFECTS A special preparation process called potentization refines the medicines to remove any toxic side-effects. It is suitable for babies and octogenarians alike and during pregnancy and menopause. However you should only take homeopathic medicines under the guidance of a qualified homeopathic practitioner if you are pregnant.
  2. GENTLE Homeopathy works by stimulating the body’s own natural defense mechanism. Although gentle the results may be powerful and long lasting.
  3. EASY TO TAKE Homeopathic medicines are given either as small pleasant tasting tablets which dissolve in the mouth, or in liquid form. Granules, powders or drops are available for babies and children.
  4. INEXPENSIVE Homeopathic remedies cost surprisingly less than allopathic prescription medication.
  5. NOT TESTED ON ANIMALS Humans respond differently to medication than animals do. All homeopathic medication is tested on healthy humans. The symptoms that a substance taken over time elicits in a healthy person, are shown to be exactly those that can be cured in a sick person suffering from those symptoms.
  6. PREVENTATIVE TREATMENT By boosting the body’s immune system, homeopathy can help improve a person’s resistance to illness and infections.
  7. YOUR INVOLVEMENT Homeopathy takes into account the whole person i.e. it is Holistic. The homeopath will ask many questions, not only about the symptoms which are bothering an individual, but how they react to the condition, as well as wanting to know about general health and lifestyle. Like a practitioner and psychologist in one.
  8. VALUE FOR MONEY Homeopathic medicines are generally less expensive than conventional medicines. The homeopath will spend a great deal of time getting to the root of your problem. The homeopathic medicines are intended to boost the immune system, making you stronger and less likely to get sick.
  9. INVALUABLE FOR FIRST AID Homeopathic medicines can be safely used the home or workplace to treat simple problems-such as bruises, minor burns, sprains, insect bites and gastric upsets. However more serious or chronic complaints should be treated by a qualified practitioner.
  10. THE MEDICINE OF THE FUTURE With over 6000 homeopathic medicines in existence and new homeopathic medicines being discovered all the time, Homeopathy is a growing art. However unlike allopathic medicine that takes drugs off the market every year as new side-effects are discovered, homeopaths still use the same medicines they were using 200 years ago with new medicines to broaden their scope. Scientists are only now discovering breakthroughs in quantum physics that helps us to develop a deeper understanding of homeopathy, as it was used 200 years ago.

Dolphin Touch Wellness Center

| Sponsors | August 13, 2010

Mission Statement:

Dolphin Touch Wellness Center is creating an ohana (family) for illumination, harmony and health. We believe “the way of harmony” is through cooperation and understanding, which are the primal teachings of the dolphin. We accomplish this through education, workshops, lectures, creating a community center and bridging holistic and traditional medicine to heal mind, body, and spirit.

President, Jeanne Russell

From early childhood, Jeanne has felt a deep connection to the dolphin world. In middle school, Jeanne prepared an in depth study of the dolphin brain. She was fascinated to discover how large a dolphin’s brain really is. During her research, she found recording of dolphin sounds underwater. From that day forward, Jeanne felt intimately connected to the spirit of the dolphin. Later, Jeanne received a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics with a minor in Computer Science from Polytechnic Institute of New York. When she needed a thesis project for her Masters Degree in Statistics from New York University, Jeanne again turned to the dolphins.

At that time, the only dolphins available to her were the ones housed at The New York Aquarium. Timidly, she approached the caretaker of The New York Aquarium and asked if there was a dolphin project she could work on. Dr. Nightingale immediately directed her to two beluga whales that were giving birth in a few weeks. From this, Jeanne was able to coordinate a research project on the nursing behavior of beluga calves. She organized 300 volunteers to record the lockon and lockoff behaviors of two new beluga calves birthed at the aquarium – Hudson and Casey. With the help of Professor Simonoff of NYU, Jeanne then went on to not only complete her thesis, but also to have her 15 page article published in the very reputable journal – Zoo Biology “Nursing behaviors of beluga calves (Delphinapterus leucas) born in captivity” 16(3):247-262. Professor Simonoff then went on to include Jeanne’s work in his book, “A Casebook For a First Course in Statistics and Data Analysis.”

Teaching

Jeanne has a lot of experience in teaching. Teachers have surrounded Jeanne all her life. Her father was a teacher for over fifty years at McKinley Junior High School in Brooklyn, New York. Immediately graduating from college, Jeanne started a teaching position at Poly Prep Academy – a prestigious college preparatory school in Brooklyn, New York. That started Jeanne’s extensive Mathematics teaching career from grades 6 – 12 and beyond to include college level at University of Missouri, Kansas City. Upon coming to Kauai, Island School hired Jeanne to teach high school Mathematics, including calculus. After only two years at Island School, Jeanne was promoted to become the first Head of the Mathematics Department at Island School. As department head, Jeanne established a K through 12 mathematics curriculum using Saxon Mathematics. This program was so effective it helped students to get acceptance into prestigious colleges like MIT, Stanford, and ULCA.

In 1991, Jeanne married Dr. David Russell and together they had two wonderful light beings – Alexandria and Sean. When David finished his Oral Surgery training at UMKC, Jeanne knew she wanted to live near the water and the dolphins. With a hope and a prayer and one child still in diapers, David and Jeanne moved to Hawaii.

Birthing of Dolphin Touch Wellness Center

One evening while running Reiki on her husband, Jeanne became aware of dolphins peering in at her window. The reiki was very powerful and effective that night. From then on, it was revealed to her the dolphin’s true desire to work with mankind, to create a center where other could experience the joy, compassion, and love of the dolphin. Such a place would be to service many different forms of healing modalities with the running theme of Healing, Enlightenment and Illumination. Thus birthed the idea of DolphinTouch – a center where dolphins and mankind could harmoniously work together.

Tantric Arts of Love

| Sponsors | August 5, 2010

We at Tantric Arts of Love feel passionately about providing what we consider REAL sexual education to as many people as possible.We at Tantric Arts of Love feel passionately about providing what we consider REAL sexual education to as many people as possible. There is overwhelming scientific evidence that points to the significant and life-enhancing health benefits of conscious sexual practices (we have outlined some of them in detail below). Not to mention the emotional and psychological benefits of learning how to authentically and safely communicate to our selves and partners about our sexuality.

Add to that the powerful support that these practices lend to one’s spiritual path, and you have a recipe for a truly extraordinary life experience!

Yeshe Dundrup has 25 years of active Tantric Sexual practice, as well as 5 years studying the Tibetan 5 Element sexual practices, under the guidance of Lama Tashi Dundrup.

Devi Ward has studied with Yeshe for over 2 years, and has additional Tantric training with Carla Tara of Ohana Tantra School. Devi also practices the Tibetan 5 element methods, under Lama Tashi’s guidance.

Yeshe and Devi are both Certified Tantric Healers and have been given Lineage permission to offer the Secret Tibetan 5 Element Sexual Teachings publicly.

Dispelling Myths & Misconceptions

This next section is dedicated to providing factual information and dispelling myths and misconceptions regarding the practice of Tantric sexuality. Of course the subject is vast, beyond what can be shared here, but we want to give you some very pertinent information in order for you to have a basic understanding.

ABOUT TANTRA

*What does “tantra” really mean?  Tantra is a Sanskrit term from ancient India, the literal definition is “to weave”, meaning specifically: the “weaving of light and sound with form”.

The “light” is visualizations of certain colors and shapes in the charkas, or energy centers, of the “form”, which is the body. The “sounds” are specific mantric syllables corresponding to the lights.  All of this together causes a vibratory energy field resulting in bliss and pleasure far beyond ordinary experience, and can result in higher spiritual experiences.  When this is coupled with our sexual methods and done in sexual union, (or even solo tantric practice), it actually becomes almost indescribable.

*Tantric sexuality is not religion, although it is an excellent support for meditative and religious practices.  Tantra is closer to kung fu or yoga, as a matter of fact, without the “lights and sounds”, we refer to it as sexual yoga.

*If one is not using the “lights and sounds with form”, technically one is not practicing Tantra, but outer or “sutra” sexuality.

*If sex is natural why do we need to learn it?  Reproductive sex is natural, in fact it is instinctual.  Animals can have sex and reproduce, as can humans, yet there is little joy and awareness in it.  Many emotional and psychological issues and traumas arise as a result of such sex.  But higher sexuality must be learned, just like swimming for example.  Some untrained humans can swim simplistically if thrown in water, others may drown.  But it is a vastly different experience for a trained swimmer who knows several different strokes and has been taught water mechanics and safety.  Such a person can swim confidently in open ocean situations and engage in many other water sports such as surfing, etc.  The untrained swimmer is relegated to dog-paddling in the shallow end of the pool.  Individuals trained in Tantric methods are like well-trained swimmers who enjoy play, health, fitness, and longevity from their activities.  What kind of “sexual swimmer” do you want to be?

Tantric Sexuality

*Tantric sexuality is not difficult to learn.  It does require learning the methods and practicing them, yet with even a moderate degree of application one can achieve quite significant results.  It does take time to become proficient, if the methods are correct and the instructions are clear, it should not take years to experience good results.  Extra-ordinary results of course, take more time and diligence in practice.  The methods taught at Tantric Arts of Love are very practical, correct (transmitted through ancient to present Lineage), and do produce results swiftly.

*Tantric sexuality does include working with energies, or sexual chi, but it also must include physical methods that support the chi and even make it possible to accomplish the chi practices.  Without the physical methods even if one could generate the energies, they would be quickly lost or even create imbalances.

*Making tantric love does not mean that we only engage in eye-gazing and touchy-feely, slow, gentle love-making all the time.  One may choose to do that, but so much would be missed.  With effective instructions we can make very passionate, wild love, building tremendous energy, as well as slow and gentle, all of it.  In this way we thoroughly enjoy all aspects of our partner and ourselves, and bring each other great pleasure and joy.

*A well-trained Tantric male is capable of multiple orgasms without ejaculating.  He can have from 5 to 30 orgasms in a session. Powerful, rolling, whole-body orgasms that can go on for several minutes, sometimes one orgasm merging into the next one!  This is possible because the mechanism of ejaculation and orgasm are in fact two separate functions. With the application of simple methods coupled with such understanding the male tantrika can achieve these results.  As he becomes more advanced he can actually share his orgasm with his partner, and she will be having his orgasm with him!!! (She can also share hers with him).

*Sometimes people are concerned that learning and practicing Tantra means that we are expected to have sex with many people, including our instructors. Being a Tantric sexual practitioner does not mean that one must now become a hedonistic sex maniac!  Most are in committed, loving relationships, or after learning Tantra, find a partner to play with.  Some do enjoy poly-amorous lifestyles, but they would do so anyway, whether practicing Tantra or not. Others prefer solo-tantra for a while.  How we most authentically live our sexuality is our free choice.

FACTS ABOUT MEN’S SEXUALITY

If a man cannot retain his semen, a woman will never know the glories of passion!
Gedun Chopel, author of “Tibetan Arts of Love”

* It takes men over the age of 35, eight days to recover the vital essence and chi lost in one single ejaculation. It takes men under the age of 35, four days to recover, and that’s if they are in good health.

*20% of male semen is composed of cerebrospinal fluid. Frequent ejaculation thus causes a chronic drain of the vital fluids that the brain and spine require to function properly. The resulting deficiency of cerebrospinal fluid can cause increasingly common conditions such as premature senility, inability to concentrate, chronic depression, loss of sexual drive, and a host of other related symptoms.”
Daniel P. Reid – The Tao of Health, Sex and Longevity

*With the regular practice of practical, easy and effective Tantric techniques, it is possible for men to orgasm without ejaculating, thereby allowing them to become multi-orgasmic and vitally enriched from their sexuality, rather than depleted.

* According to masters and Johnson, the medical definition of premature ejaculation is: When a man ejaculates before his partner orgasms, more than 50% of the time.

* Alfred Kinsey found that 75% of men ejaculate within the first 2 minutes of penetration in over half of their sexual encounters.

*If you don’t believe the above, we challenge you to time the actual period of penetration to ejaculation over several love-making sessions and see for yourself what your average is.

* According to Mayo clinic, continued lack of ejaculatory control may cause one or both partners to feel sexually dissatisfied and may lead to sexual tension and discord in the relationship.

 * Interpersonal dynamics strongly contribute to sexual function, and premature ejaculation can be caused by lack of communication between partners, hurt feelings, unresolved conflicts, and lack of emotional intimacy.

*William Reich theorizes; premature ejaculation may be the consequence of a stasis of sexual energy in the pelvic musculature, which prevents diffusion of such energy to other parts of the body.

“Ocean Breath” and breath control for both partners can assist in spreading the energy.

*Simple toning exercises can significantly improve ejaculatory control for men, by strengthening the p.c. muscles.

FACTS ABOUT WOMEN’S SEXUALITY

Women and orgasms:

* It’s possible for women to have at least 8 different types of orgasms, yet over 65% of women do not have even one, and only 15% report having orgasms regularly.  Many of the women who do have orgasms can only do so with mechanical assistance (vibrators, etc).
(Robert W. Birch PHD, Redbook survey)

8 types of female orgasms:

*  clitoral
*  vaginal
* clitoral and vaginal
* g-spot
* g-spot and clitoral
* g-spot, clitoral, vaginal
* cervical
* anal
* full-body
* breast stimulated
* multiple

*The key to orgasms for women, especially multiple orgasms, is the ability to relax the body and focus the mind. The women who have the most orgasms have the ability to remain very focused.
Carla Tara

*Women store emotional stress and trauma in their G-spot, thereby inhibiting their ability to fully experience orgasmic pleasure, even causing numbness, irritation, and pain. As a result of this, many women and their partners are confused about where the G-spot is, if it exists, and how it works.
(Deborah Sundahl, Sexual Healing Practitioner)

*When a woman’s Yoni (vagina) is healed of trauma, it is naturally orgasmic.

*With simple, easy and effective Tantric techniques, many women can transform trauma, blocks and inhibitions, restoring their natural capacity for multiple ejaculatory orgasms, thereby healing, enriching, and replenishing their vital essences.

BENEFITS OF TANTRIC SEXUAL PRACTICES

Tantric orgasms on a regular basis affect our physical, emotional and mental health by:

* Boosting infection fighting cells by 20%;
(Dr. Dudley Chapman, gynecologist)

*Stimulating and increasing secretions of the pineal and pituitary glands, thereby positively affecting brain and body chemistry;

*Revitalizing the endocrine glands for more HGH, seratonin, DHEA, and testosterone production. DHEA is believed to improve brain function, balance the immune system, help maintain and repair tissue, promote healthy skin, and improve cardiovascular health;
(Erotic University)

* Frequent and powerful orgasms increase the hormone levels of oxytocin. Oxytocin is linked to personality, passion, social skills, emotional quotient, all of which affect career, marriage, emotional health, and social skills;

*Tantric orgasms on a regular basis have the ability to alleviate depression, prolong life-span, strengthen immune system, and improve quality of life;

*Tantric sexual practices are healing, strengthening, simple, easy and highly effective.

Tantric sexual practices have the ability to correct many sexually related issues such as:

*Enabling non-orgasmic women to become multi-orgasmic;
*Enabling women to become sexually expressive and personally empowered;
*Enabling men to retain long, strong, and powerful erections;
*Enabling men to become multi-orgasmic and retain vital essences lost through involuntary ejaculation.

Tantric sexual practices also have the ability to benefit relationships by:

*Cultivating a deeper sense of intimacy and connection;
*Building and increasing trust by regularly practicing communication skills;
*Using orgasmic pleasure and meditative focus to transform dysfunctional patterns.

This is just a brief overview, if you have specific questions please feel free to write or call and we will try to answer them for you.

Happy Science, The Path to Happiness

MEDITATION… The Path to Happiness

Human beings are more than materialistic beings; we are spiritual beings embodying a body and a soul. Each of us knows we have a mind, but do we know how to use it for our highest benefit? How do you control your mind daily? Meditation helps us realize happiness by opening our hearts, thus discovering our true value. Meditation also helps you to develop your spiritual eye. When thinking about meditation, some of us may think of Zen meditation.

It is true that Zen meditation is one way to practice meditation, but meditation is more than just sitting and emptying your mind. The purpose of meditation is to communicate with the heavenly world and to understand that the heavenly world actually exists in your subconscious and connects you to the spiritual world. The subconscious is a bridge to the spirit world that leads to universal wisdom. By practicing meditation you will gain wisdom and feel serenity within.

Right Mind

We all seek peace of mind and meditation helps with the exploration of “Right Mind.” It is difficult to give a simple explanation of “Right Mind”, but what we mean by “right” in this context is a state of mind in accordance with the laws of the Great Universe. As we contemplate “Right Mind” there are two main points to consider: first, we need to keep the mind in balance; second, we need to find the cloudy thoughts within ourselves and remove them through self-reflection. This practice will restore your mind to its original state. Come and feel joy and discover your true nature!

Qigong & Watsu Therapy at Enchanted Kahuna Valley

| Sponsors | July 19, 2010

Personal Empowerment

Personal empowerment is rooted in discovering the core of our health and wellness. Without health, we are forever in a struggle for inner peace. The fact is, according to the National Institutes of Health, at LEAST 70% of all health-related problems and disease stem from stress.

So it seems that our real personal work needs to start with reducing stress, right?

Many people will say that they don’t have much stress or that they’ve got it under control. We don’t like to admit that we have stress when the fact is, stress is natural. Stress may actually be necessary for our growth as it pushes us to get out of a rut or a stagnant place in our life. The key is to move away from stress in the shortest time possible.

You might say that this is easier said than done.

Reducing Stress

We have found that the health care practice of Qigong offers excellent techniques for reducing stress. This ancient healing modality from China is often referred to as “Chinese Yoga”. Qigong takes the best principles of yoga’s stretching and breathing and puts a Traditional Chinese Medicine twist on it. The simple exercises in Qigong (pronounced ‘chee gung’) can reduce stress, while bringing a new joy to your self healing. It is empowering to discover that you can heal yourself. Practicing these easily learned exercises can help you focus on the organ systems in your body that need cleansing and strengthening. You can also relieve joint pain and chronic headaches (Qigong’s techniques are excellent for relieving many chronic conditions).

Like tai chi, Qigong is slow-moving and low impact, making it accessible for all ages. Whereas tai chi is a regimented set of movements, Qigong – also spelled Chi Gong – is a set of single movements which makes it less complex and easier to learn.

Kahuna Valley

Our classes are held at the beautiful Kahuna Valley Retreat on Kauai every Saturday when Francesco Garri Garripoli is home on island.

When Francesco, author of “Qigong – Essence of the Healing Dance” and producer/director of the acclaimed PBS-TV documentary “Qigong – Ancient Chinese Healing for the 21st Century“, is traveling, he teaches Qigong workshops around the world. His DVDs, which feature Daisy Lee, have won many awards and are widely considered the best teaching tools for this personal wellness practice.

To complement the stress reducing benefits of Qigong, Francesco offers 90 minute Watsu Water Therapy sessions in the solar heated custom-built Watsu pool he personally designed and built at the Kahuna Valley Retreat. Francesco has been practicing Watsu since 2003 and is certified by the Worldwide Aquatic Bodyworkers Association (WABA). Watsu is a beautiful modality where you can let go and fully receive in a peaceful and nurturing environment.

Kahuna Valley, nestled at the foot of sacred Makaleha mountain, is the ancient location on Kaua’i where Kahunas – Kahuna Lau Lap’ao – grew medicinal herbs and practiced their healing arts.

Many visitors to Kauai never visit the interior of this beautiful island so the opportunity to experience Qigong or Watsu at enchanting Kahuna Valley is certain to be joyful and meaningful. Peace…
